The Children's Commissioner speaks on behalf of all children to ensure their interests, rights and welfare are respected and upheld. This position is established by the statute, the Children's Commissioner Act 2003. The Act allows the Commissioner to inquire into any matter affecting children and young people in any service or organisation and to monitor and investigate the actions of the Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children. The Office is an independent authority and promotes children's and young people's wellbeing through advocacy, consultation, monitoring, research and investigation.
